Random Memories

BANGALORE KANNADA
At a wedding in Bangalore:

November 27, 2010: The wedding so different yet so same! There were the typically overdressed, inappropriately dressed and perfectly dressed people! Laundry tags on beautiful sarees, people sleeping in the front row during the rituals and the slightly newish Indian wedding feature, randomly moving confused foreigners.

Kohl in every almond eyes, people feeling free to come over to you and begin talking in Tamil and you gape at them thinking you will never grasp Bangalore Kannada. Also at the same event, two women speaking in crisp B’lore Kannada, halfway through the conversation they realise they are both from Salem, quickly look around and guiltily switch to Tamil.

At A Baroda Restaurant: Prashant checks the menu and asks the waiter if he could get a lasagna, an Italian dish pronounced lazaanya). The waiter “corrects” Prashant and asks him if he meant “lasaniya’; his explanation it is called so because it contains a lot of lasan, garlic! We did order ‘lasaniya’ thinking it might be in fact, be interesting. We were right it was so much in keeping with our palate, much like Chinees!
